Botany Worsted Mills, sixty acres of wool in Passaic

Botany Mills was organised in 1887 and put up a worsted wool complex on the Passaic and Clifton line that grew into one of the largest woolen mills in the United States. Wool employed more than twenty thousand people across Passaic, Clifton and Garfield at the peak, and Botany was the biggest single employer among them. It was the main target of the 1926 textile strike, which ran close to a year. The surviving buildings went on the National Register in 1991 and the neighbourhood around them is still called Botany Village.
