The depot opened in 1940 as the Assembly and Repair Department of the brand new naval air station. Its workforce reached 7,300 during the Second World War, working around the clock to put damaged aircraft back into service. It became a separate command in 1967 and was renamed three more times before taking its present name in 2006. With roughly 5,000 workers it is the largest industrial employer in northeast Florida and southeast Georgia.
