The Delair Bridge, the first crossing of the Delaware at Philadelphia
1896
Pennsauken, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Before 1896 everything crossing the river between Philadelphia and South Jersey went by ferry. The Pennsylvania Railroad ended that with this two track lift bridge, opened in April 1896, connecting its North Philadelphia tracks to the Jersey shore lines. Freight trains and New Jersey Transit's Atlantic City Line still run over it, thirty years older than any road bridge on the river here.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
