Roosevelt Stadium, the WPA arena Union City buried under a school
1937
Roosevelt Stadium, Union City, New Jersey
The Works Progress Administration put $172,472 and 350 men into an art deco bowl on the ridge, and the ribbon was cut on 25 November 1937. Walther Mahnken designed it, and it was built from stucco over bricks salvaged out of two schools the town had just knocked down. It held semi-pro baseball, soccer, boxing, tractor pulls and an exhibition game with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in it. Union City demolished the stadium in 2005 to build a high school on the plot, and the replacement field sits on the school's roof.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
