Babe Ruth becomes the Babe in Fayetteville
1914
Fayetteville, North Carolina
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
George Ruth hit his first professional home run at a spring training game in Fayetteville in March 1914, a nineteen year old just out of a Baltimore reform school, and it was here his teammates started calling him Jack Dunn's babe. The ballfield site by the river carries a marker. He came back years later and said the Fayetteville homer was the longest he ever hit, which was probably a lie and entirely in character.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
