Emil Lence, a dress manufacturer, and his father John bought a roller rink at Eastern Parkway and Howard Avenue in 1944 and reopened it as a boxing club in 1947. Matchmaker Teddy Brenner stocked the card with young fighters nobody had ranked yet, and enough of them beat the favourite that the room picked up the name House of Upsets. Floyd Patterson fought there twelve times between 1952 and 1955 and won all but one, a 1954 decision that went to Joey Maxim and was argued about for years afterward.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
