Four generations of the Philipse family ran a manor of more than 200,000 acres from this house above the Hudson, worked by tenant farmers and by people they enslaved. The family sided with the Crown in the Revolution, lost the estate to confiscation and fled to England. The hall later served as Yonkers village hall and then city hall, and has been a state historic site open to the public since 1912.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
