The Morris family held a 2,000 acre manor here under a patent of 1697. Lewis Morris signed the Declaration of Independence and Gouverneur Morris served as penman of the Constitution, giving its preamble the wording that survives. In 1840 Gouverneur Morris Jr. Let a railroad cross the land and sold lots beside the tracks, turning the estate into a village of rowhouses and small factories.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
