Thomas Pell bought this land from the Siwanoy in 1654 and his family held it for generations. The Greek Revival house standing now was built between 1836 and 1842 by Robert Bartow, a Pell descendant, and it is the only manor house left anywhere in the park. The city took the estate in 1888, Fiorello La Guardia ran a summer office out of it in 1936, and it opened to the public as a museum in 1946.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
