Hobart Manor, a vice president's estate that became a campus

A Scottish wool merchant named John McCullough built the fieldstone core of this house in 1877, two storeys with a pair of octagonal turrets facing the valley. Jennie Tuttle Hobart, widow of Garret Hobart, the vice president who died in office in 1899, bought it in 1902 as a summer place, and her son wrapped a forty room brick wing around it between 1915 and 1919. The family sold the whole estate to New Jersey in 1948 for 200,000 dollars, and the teachers college that moved in four years later is now William Paterson University. The mansion holds the university's administrative offices.
