Van Cortlandt Manor at the mouth of the Croton
1697
Croton-on-Hudson, New York

The Van Cortlandt family built this stone and brick manor house where the Croton River meets the Hudson, at the centre of a colonial land grant that ran for tens of thousands of acres. It is one of the oldest surviving houses in the lower Hudson valley and is now a museum and a National Historic Landmark. The manor system it represents is the reason so much of Westchester was tenanted rather than owned.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
