Palm Valley shipped palm fronds north for Palm Sunday

The settlement on the inland side of San Pablo Island took its name from the palms around 1901, on ground the Spanish had called the Plains of Diego. Farming paid badly, so residents cut palm fronds and sold them north for Palm Sunday services. Once the Intracoastal Waterway opened in 1912 the bundles went out by packet boat from a dock at the foot of the Palm Valley bridge. The census counted 63 people living here in 1930.
