San Pablo Island was a peninsula until a canal cut it loose

Every one of the Jacksonville beaches sits on this barrier island, which was not an island at all until 1912. A neck of land about ten miles long at Palm Valley tied it to the mainland until the Florida East Coast Canal Company dug the Palm Valley Cut, joining the San Pablo and Tolomato rivers and finishing this stretch of the Intracoastal Waterway. The name reaches back to a Timucua village the Spanish missions called San Pablo, which is also where Pablo Beach, now Jacksonville Beach, took its name.
