The Taylor Land Company laid Essex out in 1909 and sold cheap lots to Baltimore residents who wanted room for a garden outside the city line, pushing sales with a promotional pamphlet. The first tract ran ten blocks between Mace and Marlyn avenues, and the company gave away land for two churches and the volunteer fire station to get the place going. What turned a garden suburb into a working town was the Glenn L. Martin aircraft plant up the road, which had more than 53,000 people on its payroll at the World War II peak. The 2020 census counted 40,505 residents.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
