Inland Steel, the last big independent steelmaker in the Calumet
1893
East Chicago, Indiana
Inland began in 1893 when its founders bought the land and machinery of a failed mill, and it built its Indiana Harbor Works on the East Chicago lakefront into one of the largest steel plants in the country. Unlike its neighbours it stayed independent of US Steel and Bethlehem for a century, run for much of that time by the family of founder Joseph Block. Ispat International bought the company in 1998, and the works passed on to Cleveland-Cliffs.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
