Inland Steel put up the first hundred houses here in 1918, two storey brick duplexes for two hundred families, with running water, indoor toilets and heating that most millworkers did not have at home. The company added another hundred units in the 1940s for the postwar housing shortage and went on renting the whole neighbourhood to its own employees until 1969, when it began selling the houses off. The curving streets still look nothing like the rest of East Chicago's grid, and Sunnyside has one of the highest shares of owner occupied homes in the city.
