The Joliet Iron and Steel Works
1869
Columbia Street, Joliet, Illinois
Blast furnaces went up here in 1869 to turn out steel rails, and at its height this was the second largest steel mill in the country. It was folded into the Illinois Steel Company in 1889 and the Joliet works stopped in the 1930s. The Forest Preserve District of Will County bought the ruins in the 1990s and you can now walk through the foundations.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
