Sparrows Point was the largest steel mill in the world

Maryland Steel poured its first steel on this point in 1889 and Bethlehem Steel bought the works in 1916. By the 1950s it ran four miles along the harbor edge and was the biggest steel plant on earth, feeding the Golden Gate Bridge towers, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and a great deal of the American merchant fleet. Bethlehem also built a company town here with its own police, fire department, schools, cinema and bowling alley, housing assigned by race and job. The mill went bankrupt in 2001, the last furnace came down in 2015, and the site now trades as the Tradepoint Atlantic logistics port.
