Acme bought 133 acres on the Little Calumet River in 1917 and put up a hoop mill the following year, turning out the steel strapping and banding that held freight together. By the end of the 1950s the firm was among the three hundred largest industrial companies in America and had left Chicago for Riverdale entirely. Acme went bankrupt in 2001, and the mill was sold on and kept rolling under new owners.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
