Voters merged the Missouri City and Sugar Land school districts into one on 18 April 1959, and the new district ran segregated schools: white teenagers at the new Dulles High School in Sugar Land, Black teenagers at the M.R. Wood School. The trustees adopted a freedom of choice plan on 23 June 1964 and desegregation took effect in September 1965, which also closed the under-enrolled Oaklane and Staffordshire elementary schools. The district now runs 86 schools across 170 square miles and is among the most ethnically diverse in Texas.
