Air Base Elementary was one of the first two Florida schools to desegregate
1959
Homestead, Florida
The school opened in 1958 to serve families attached to the Homestead airfield. On 7 September 1959, twenty five Black children walked into this school and into Orchard Villa Elementary in Liberty City, the first two public grade schools in Florida to admit them. Dade County did it without the troops and mobs that met desegregation elsewhere in the South, though white families pulled out of Orchard Villa within a year. It operates today as the Air Base K-8 Center.
