Shaker Heights desegregates its schools before anybody made it

Neighbours around Ludlow Elementary organised in the late 1950s to keep their corner of the suburb integrated rather than let it turn over block by block. Shaker Heights became one of the first American school systems to pursue desegregation on its own in the early 1960s, and later ran voluntary busing between its schools to balance them. All of it fed one high school, which remains the only public high school in the district.
