Desegregation closes College Park's Black high school, and its students protest
1969
College Park, Georgia
Eva L. Thomas High opened in 1964 for College Park's Black students, named for an Atlanta educator who died months before it took its first class. Under federal pressure to desegregate, the board closed it in 1969 and moved its students to schools nearby including the formerly all-white College Park High, a decision the school's own students and parents turned out to protest. The building served as a middle school until 1980 and now holds an elementary school.
