Elgin's oldest neighbourhood, 697 buildings above the Fox
1835
Elgin, Illinois
James and Hezekiah Gifford settled this ground in 1835 and it remains the oldest built-up part of Elgin. The historic district drawn around it in 1983 counts 697 buildings, 429 of them contributing, mostly houses and churches with an art museum, a masonic temple and Elgin Academy mixed in. Three of the buildings were already listed on their own before the district existed: the academy, the First Universalist Church and the Gifford-Davidson House.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
