Elgin Academy, chartered in 1839 and closed in 2024
1839
Elgin, Illinois
The Illinois General Assembly granted this school its charter on 22 February 1839, four years after the town itself was settled, and it took boys and girls together and answered to no denomination from the start. Old Main went on the National Register on its own in 1976. The board shut the school at the end of the 2023-24 year after 185 years, graduating a final class of 19, and said an independent school was no longer sustainable in Elgin. A new K-12 Islamic school bought the campus that August.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
