The district covers the ground Joseph Naper's settlers laid out from 1831 plus the first additions to it, and it runs to 613 buildings, 544 of them counted as contributing. That is a large surviving core for a town that went from farm county seat to one of the biggest cities in Illinois. Naperville was the DuPage County seat until 1868, when the courthouse went to Wheaton.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
