A canal cut across the base of the peninsula in 1881 let vessels skip Death's Door entirely, and the town at its end became the largest shipbuilder on the Great Lakes. It built submarine chasers and tugs in both wars and still builds and repairs thousand-foot lake freighters, one of the few American yards that can.
