Gulfport Shipbuilding turns out tugs and barges for the war
1930
Port Arthur, Texas
The yard opened in 1930 as Gulfport Boiler and Welding Works, doing repair work for the refineries along the canal. During the Second World War it built tank barges and a run of ocean going auxiliary tugs for the navy, several of which stayed in service into the 1970s. It kept working the canal until it closed in 1985.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
