Babbitt, the North Bergen neighbourhood named after a soap works
1907
Babbitt, North Bergen, New Jersey
B.T. Babbitt's company bought 87 acres between Granton and Fairview in 1904 and moved production there in 1907, trading a 22,000 square foot plant on West Street in Lower Manhattan for one of the largest soap factories in the world. Babbitt's Best Soap gave the district its name, and the name outlasted the company. The ground west of Tonnelle Avenue is now warehouses, light manufacturing and the protected Eastern Brackish Marsh.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
