Sauget, the village Monsanto incorporated around its own plants
1926
Sauget, Illinois
Monsanto executives incorporated this village south of East St. Louis in 1926, named it after the company and named its streets after company men. Local government carried most of the environmental rules at the time, so having a village of your own meant light regulation and low taxes. It was renamed for its first village president once the company's PCB production became national news. Fewer than two hundred people live there.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
