Western Pipe and Steel builds warships on the South San Francisco mudflats
1941
South San Francisco, California
The company started out rolling steel pipe for western waterworks and took on penstock work for Grand Coulee Dam in the 1930s. It had already built hulls for the Shipping Board in the First World War, and when the Maritime Commission started ordering in 1941 the South San Francisco yard went back to it at scale, turning out cargo ships and escort carriers. The yard is why a city that had been packing meat and mixing paint spent the war years as a shipbuilding town.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
