Brown Shipbuilding launches a destroyer escort a week
1942
Greens Bayou, Houston Ship Channel, Texas
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Herman and George Brown of Brown and Root took nine million dollars of Navy money in 1942 and built a yard where Greens Bayou meets the ship channel. Between May 1943 and August 1944 it turned out 61 destroyer escorts, close to one a week, and it followed those with 254 landing ships. One of the escorts built here, the Samuel B. Roberts, was sunk off Samar while charging a Japanese battleship force.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
