West Oakland station and the East Bay mouth of the Transbay Tube

The station sits on elevated platforms at the East Bay end of the Transbay Tube, the immersed tunnel that put trains under the bay. Service through the tube between Oakland and San Francisco opened in September 1974, more than thirty years after the Key System ferries and bridge trains it eventually replaced. Every main BART line except the Orange stops here, because the Oakland Wye where the system's routes split lies immediately east of the platforms.
