The North River Tunnels, the only rail tubes into Manhattan since 1910

The Pennsylvania Railroad dug two tubes under the Hudson between 1904 and 1908 and opened them to traffic late in 1910, which is how its trains finally reached Manhattan instead of stopping on the Jersey shore. Every Amtrak and NJ Transit train into Penn Station still uses the same pair, at a ceiling of roughly 24 crossings an hour, and they run near that ceiling at peak. Flooding from Hurricane Sandy in 2012 damaged them badly enough that replacing them became a national argument.
