When National Steel moved to close the mill in 1982, the workers bought it instead, taking wage cuts to fund what was then the largest employee-owned company in the United States. For a while it worked and Weirton became the standard example in every argument about worker ownership. Imports and debt caught up with it in the 2000s, and what the mill mostly left behind is the question of whether it could have gone another way.
