The Homestead Works, the mill that became a shopping mall
1881
Homestead, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel built the plant in 1881 and Andrew Carnegie bought it in 1883, after which it expanded into his flagship works. It was fed by its own coal and iron fields, a railroad 425 miles long and a line of lake steamships. The 1892 strike happened here. The mill closed in the 1980s and an open air shopping centre now covers the ground, with a row of stacks left standing.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
