Cotton money built the houses along West Main and West Jefferson, and the sawn wooden trim on the Queen Anne porches gave the town its nickname. The district runs about 77 acres and was listed on the National Register in 1986. It takes in the Sims Library and Lyceum of 1905, paid for by a farmer named Nicholas P. Sims who left his estate to give the county a free library, one of the first ten public libraries in Texas.
