Cape May, the Victorian town
1878
Cape May, New Jersey

One of the oldest seaside resorts in the country, burned nearly flat in 1878 and rebuilt all at once in the gingerbread style of that single decade, so it is now the largest collection of Victorian houses in America, a whole town of them, a National Historic Landmark entire. It had gone out of fashion and stayed poor long enough that nobody knocked them down, which is why they are still there.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
