John Cotton Dana builds the library that invented the business branch

Newark's free public library opened in 1889 and moved into its Washington Street building in 1901. Dana arrived as director in 1902 and stayed until he died in 1929, building foreign language collections for the city's immigrants and a collection for businessmen that was the first of its kind in the United States. In 1909 he founded the Newark Museum inside the library and ran that too.
