Wallabout Market, the city's produce capital
1894
Wallabout Bay, Brooklyn, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Farm wagons had been selling at Wallabout Bay since 1884 when the city hired William Tubby to build them a proper market, and between 1894 and 1896 he put up a Dutch Colonial Revival town of stepped gables and a clock tower, a deliberate nod to the Walloons who settled the bay in 1624. It handled produce, meat, dairy and fish for the whole borough and was reckoned second only to Les Halles in Paris. The Navy Yard needed the land in the Second World War and the whole thing was knocked down.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
