The Wallabout Bay prison ships kill more Americans than the fighting

The British began mooring decommissioned hulks in this bay in October 1776 and used them to hold American prisoners of war. Aboard the worst of them, the Jersey, roughly a dozen men died every night of smallpox, dysentery, typhoid and starvation. About 11,500 died in the ships here, more Americans than were killed in combat across the entire Revolutionary War. Bones surfaced along the shore for years, and the remains were eventually laid in a crypt at Fort Greene Park.
