Venice, the Illinois end of the McKinley Bridge
1910
Venice, Illinois
A ferry ran from this bank as early as 1804, the village was laid out in 1841, and the Mississippi kept flooding it until levees went up after 1903. In 1910 the McKinley Bridge opened from Venice across to St. Louis, carrying interurban electric trains down the middle and road traffic on the outside lanes. It was named for William B. McKinley of the Illinois Traction System, who built it, and not for the president.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
