Turtle Creek, the main street of the Westinghouse valley

George Westinghouse bought land up and down this valley in 1887 and 1888, and the boroughs that followed were all built around his plants: air brakes at Wilmerding, electrical works at East Pittsburgh, a foundry at Trafford. Turtle Creek incorporated in 1892 and became the shopping street those payrolls used. Westinghouse began moving work out of the valley in 1945, and the borough is now down to about 5,000 people. The creek itself is named for the Turtle clan who lived along it.
