Pitcairn, the borough named for the man who moved the railroad here

Robert Pitcairn ran the Pennsylvania Railroad's Pittsburgh division and decided by the 1870s that the 28th Street yards in the city were hopeless. He bought 215 acres in the Turtle Creek valley in 1874, and construction of a huge classification yard began in 1888. At its height the yard and shops employed close to ten thousand men, and the borough beside them took his name. The Pennsylvania Railroad shut down major operations there in January 1967 and the town has been shrinking ever since.
