The borough takes its name from the Swisshelm family farmstead, and the Swisshelm still remembered is Jane Grey Swisshelm, the abolitionist editor who in 1850 became the first woman admitted to the United States Senate press gallery and who retired here after nursing in the Civil War. Industrial Swissvale was made by George Westinghouse, who put the Union Switch and Signal works in the borough to build railway signalling. The population was 8,624 in 2020.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
