Travel Town, the Griffith Park railyard built out of donated locomotives

Charley Atkins, an employee of the city parks department, spent the late 1940s writing to railroads to ask whether any of them would give Los Angeles a full size steam locomotive for children to climb on. Enough said yes that the city dedicated Travel Town in the northwest corner of Griffith Park on 14 December 1952. The collection covers western railroading from the 1880s through the 1930s, and the yard is free to walk through.
