Norfolk and Western built its own locomotives in Roanoke and built them so well that the railway stayed with steam years after everyone else quit, and the streamlined Class J was the argument: a hundred and ten miles an hour on level track hauling a full passenger train. The 611 is the last one left, restored twice by the city that made it, and it still runs excursions. The shops that turned it out are two blocks from where it now sits.
