Around five hundred pieces of rolling stock sit on a former interurban right-of-way in a cornfield at Union, which makes the Illinois Railway Museum the largest railway museum in the United States. The distinction here is that much of it runs: they fire the steam locomotives and put the streetcars and the interurbans out on the demonstration line, so what you get is not a shed of static exhibits but a working railway that happens to be a museum. It is almost entirely volunteer-run.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
