Three gasoline tanks explode on the Newark waterfront
1983
Newark, New Jersey
Just after midnight on 7 January 1983, three gasoline storage tanks at the Texaco terminal on the Newark waterfront went up. The fire department found no foul play. Workers had left a pipeline delivery unmonitored, against the company's own operating manual, roughly 150,000 gallons overflowed, and the vapour cloud that formed found something to ignite it. One missed gauge check took out a tank farm.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
