The Romeoville refinery explosion throws a tower most of a mile
1984
Romeoville, Illinois
A pressure vessel at the Union Oil refinery ruptured on 23 July 1984 and the escaping vapour found an ignition source. Seventeen people were killed. The upper 14 metres of the vessel came down about a kilometre from where it had stood while the base stayed put at the centre of the fire. The plant is still working, now as Citgo's Lemont Refinery, running about 183,000 barrels a day.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
